SENSE Charter School
Sense, the Southeast Neighborhood School of Excellence, is a K-8 charter school on the Southeast side of Indianapolis. The school is focused not only on academics, but also on developing social skills and civic responsibility. Erin Good, the school counselor of 4 years, “was drawn to SENSE because of its focus on education and providing for the whole child, far beyond their academics. SENSE continues to be innovative and responsive to student and family needs, including its current focus on earning certification for its schoolwide trauma-informed practices.”
SENSE was the recipient of Project Period’s first feminine hygiene product delivery in January 2017. Since then, we have supplied the school with over 1,400 products! Erin believes that “Project Period fits in well with SENSE’s holistic approach and emphasis on community partners to support students. Before Project Period, SENSE would purchase feminine hygiene products out of its own funds, and many teachers would buy products with their personal money. Project Period has been great in not only providing those items to us free of charge, but also creating opportunities to talk to our female students about their menstrual cycles. When students come in to ask for supplies, it gives us the chance to talk about if they know how to track their cycles, if they are experiencing other symptoms with their period that warrant a visit to the nurse, if they are practicing hygiene routines to keep themselves clean and healthy, etc.”
We are so excited to hear that these conversations are happening! Proper period education is so important, but so is the general education of the girls in our community. One of the main goals of Project Period is to lower the absence rates of girls experiencing hardships. We believe that no girl should ever have to miss school because she does not have adequate feminine hygiene products during her period. Erin believes that the ability to send extra products home “leads to less absences related to our female students’ menstrual cycles.”
In addition to providing Project Period’s donated products to the students, SENSE provides a food pantry for the families. They are always in need of hygiene products, home cleaning supplies, toilet paper, diapers, dish soap, and laundry detergent. If you have anything to give, please consider donating to the SENSE food pantry. If you’re looking to donate your time, there are great volunteer opportunities within the school as a student mentor or classroom helper!
Project Period is proud to partner with SENSE and their compassionate, dedicated school counselor, Erin. Thank you, Erin, for all you do for the community! For more information about SENSE and how you can get involved, please visit www.senseindy.org.
